Excellent romhack, it takes everything you thought you knew about the Ocarina of Time combat system and creates a whole new challenge. You face room after room, wave after wave of enemies in the hope of beating the Three Trials set by Shiba, the Stronghold guardian.
The new music and locations make this a very ambitious project. The music mostly provides a melancholic backdrop to the eerie situation Link finds himself in. It's very effective in creating an uneasy atmosphere as you work towards beating the Trials and ultimately escaping the Stronghold. The hub world environment of the Stronghold itself is well designed. It becomes strangely welcoming after you meet new NPCs, all of whom were trying to escape the devastation caused by Ganondorf's relentless pursuit of power. As you progress, new items become available and there is a very satisfying sense of achievement in improving your skills and your arsenal.
Fans of Zelda, Dark Souls and Diablo should certainly look to play this game. It stands out from other Zelda OoT romhacks which don't deviate much from the established gameplay template.
As for compatibility with original N64 hardware, it works. I haven't experienced any crashes or glitches whatsoever. I am playing a NTSC version on PAL hardware via a Blaze Universal Adaptor. The resolution is a bit lower than original Oot, Majora's Mask and indeed other romhacks, despite the need for the Expansion Pak. However, the frame rate stays solid amidst all the frantic fighting, and so it remains playable. When you're surrounded by things that want to kill you, it is a necessary trade-off.
I did have one small issue. I have the UltraHDMI mod, and Ultimate Trial required me to tinker with the HDMI output settings in order to see any visuals. Simply switch on 'Direct Mode' (reducing latency & bypassing buffer syncing at the expense of potential tearing) and it's fine. Switching from 50hz to 60hz is also ideal. I don't know if this is an issue with the HW2 1.10 firmware update (I'm using HW1 1.08), but hey, it made it work so I'm happy.
All in all, an essential romhack for any Zelda fan, and it's as addictive as a packet of crack biscuits.
Pretty good! Playable on OG hardware. Game resolution is fuzzy, even compared to the original or other n64 games, but I imagine that's just a casualty of the process of getting it on the cart. It's playable though and a neat way to play on the original hardware.
As always quality was fantastic no issues no complaints. Great website
