Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! is based on the widely popular boxing manga and anime series Hajime no Ippo. The game is heavily inspired the NES classic Punch-Out game formula but elevates it with deep technical mechanics and a 2D side-scrolling perspective.

Key Features & Gameplay Mechanics:

• Strategic Distance Gauge: Unlike traditional stationary boxing games, a distance tracker on the screen shifts based on positioning. Certain high-impact punches like hooks or uppercuts require close proximity, while characters with extreme reach can pick apart opponents from afar. 
• Deep Control Scheme: Punch variations change based on directional inputs. Pressing standard buttons executes a jab, while holding up or down with a punch triggers uppercuts and devastating body blows respectively.
• Guard and Block System: Blocking triggers automatically when you are not actively punching. However, absorbing too many blows wears down your guard meter, causing a guard break that leaves you completely defenseless.
• Branching Story Mode: The campaign chronicles protagonist Ippo Makunouchi’s career up to his iconic JBC featherweight title rematch against Sendō Takeshi. Unique to this game, losing specific matches causes the story to fork into alternative timelines—such as fighting Akira Shigeta if you lose to Date Eiji.
• Character Customization: Outside of the main narrative, players can use points earned across different modes to upgrade stats (attack, defense, and guard levels) on a custom fighter.
